AFS Product Liability Partner Jonathan Judge will speak on a panel at the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization’s (ICPHSO) 2026 Annual Meeting and Training Symposium on February 25, 2026.
The panel will examine how in recent years, product litigation in Europe has been transformed by the introduction of the revised Product Liability Directive and General Product Safety Regulation, as well as the introduction of a pan-European class actions regime (Representative Actions Directive).Together, this legislation creates a framework that allows for product liability and safety class actions to be pursued in Europe in a way never before seen.
The legislators’ stated goals are to improve consumer protection from new and complex technologies, business models and supply chains, and to address an imbalance in the existing legislation between consumers and producers. These changes will have significant implications for consumers and businesses alike.
As those working in the product safety space work through the practical implications and given that much of the legislation is yet to have full effect, drawing together viewpoints from diverse stakeholders to understand the challenges and opportunities will be beneficial to all.\
