ArentFox Schiff is hosting and sponsoring the NYCPA Private Wealth Conference in New York on December 10. AFS speakers include Kevin Matz, Tracy McLaughlin, Brittany Sokoloff, Patricia Pileggi and Vanessa Meeks.
Join AFS attorneys and other leading private wealth professionals for a dynamic program addressing timely developments in estate planning, tax controversy, family office structures and taxation, and Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) planning. A networking reception will follow the program.
In “Recent Developments Affecting Estate Planning,” Kevin Matz and Tracy McLaughlin will examine some of the most significant developments shaping estate planning today. The discussion will address planning in light of the permanent $15 million estate and gift tax exclusion amount, subject to indexing, beginning January 1, 2026; the IRS’s position on grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs) in the Elcan case; the potential double taxation of trusts and estates and their beneficiaries following changes to itemized deductions under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act; and the New York City pied-à-terre tax surcharge.
In “Planning with Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) Funds Under the New Tax Law and the Impending December 31, 2026 Deadline,” Kevin Matz and Tracy McLaughlin will provide a focused look at QOZ planning under the new tax law. The session will examine the new rules for “Tranche 2” of the QOZ regime beginning January 1, 2027, as well as potential pitfalls for QOZ fund investors and the approaching December 31, 2026 deferred gain recognition date.
Patricia Pileggi and Brittany Sokoloff will present “Tax Controversy – Coming Clean or Facing the Music,” exploring significant issues confronting taxpayers and their advisors today. Topics will include the disclosure of foreign assets, gifts, and income; managing IRS audits; innocent spouse relief; criminal investigations; and estate administration considerations.
Kevin Matz and Vanessa Meeks will join fellow family office professionals for “The Family Office Roundtable – Hot Issues in Family Office Structures, Administration and Taxation.” Through a roundtable discussion, the panel will explore some of the most pressing structural, administrative, and tax issues facing family offices, including considerations for establishing a single family office versus embedding family office functions within an operating business; the use of “Lender-type” profits interests, C corporations, and purpose trusts; IRC Section 2701 considerations; the role of private trust companies; financial information and reporting; and securities law considerations.
