Life Sciences Industry Group Co-Leader Stephanie Trunk was quoted discussing how pharmaceutical manufacturers are responding to the Trump Administration’s Most Favored Nation (MFN) drug pricing initiative, which seeks to align US drug prices more closely with lower prices charged in certain foreign markets.

Industry advisors report that some companies are considering delaying product launches in overseas markets, and in some cases reassessing existing market participation, to avoid potential impacts on US pricing.

According to Stephanie, discussions about launch timing and market sequencing are taking place behind the scenes as pharmaceutical companies evaluate the long-term implications of MFN policies.

Stephanie said, “No one wants to completely say that [we’re delaying a launch] and give up an entire market.”

She added, “Certainly there’s more talk of ‘Can we punt this? … Can we launch in the US and then maybe launch years later in Japan?’”

Stephanie noted that there is increased coordination between US legal and business teams and their international counterparts as companies develop global commercialization strategies in response to evolving pricing requirements. In conversations with clients, many of whom are general counsel at major pharmaceutical companies, Stephanie has observed more cross-border strategic planning than ever before as companies seek to assess the potential effects of MFN pricing on worldwide product launches.
