Arent Fox Chairman Emeritus Marc Fleischaker Receives Justice Potter Stewart Award

Washington, DC — On May 8, in recognition of his longstanding commitment to the administration of justice in the District of Columbia, Arent Fox LLP Chairman Emeritus Marc L. Fleischaker was honored with the Justice Potter Stewart Award by the Council for Court Excellence. The lifetime achievement award was presented at the 18th Annual Justice Potter Stewart Award Dinner held at the Organization of American States.

In honoring Mr. Fleischaker, the CCE highlighted his decades of services to the DC legal community and leadership roles at Arent Fox. During his distinguished career, Mr. Fleischaker has chaired several nonprofits dedicated to improving access to justice, including the Appleseed Foundation, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the National Health Law Program, and the District of Columbia Bar Foundation.

In addition, he has served on the board of directors for groups that include the CCE, and chaired the Senior Attorney Initiative for Legal Services — an effort co-sponsored by the District of Columbia Bar and the Access to Justice Commission that is dedicated to encouraging senior lawyers to contribute pro bono service. Mr. Fleischaker has also engaged in significant class action litigation on a pro bono basis against various federal agencies, including the Government Accountability Office, the Library of Congress, and the Department of Agriculture.

“Going back to the firm’s founding, Arent Fox partners have shared the view that pro bono work is fundamental to strengthening our community and is an essential aspect of corporate responsibility,” said Chairman Mark M. Katz. “Marc personifies this spirit. The Justice Potter Stewart Award is a testament to the integrity, talent, and dedication that Marc has demonstrated throughout his career and that we are fortunate to see every day while working with him at Arent Fox.”

Mr. Fleischaker joined Arent Fox in 1971 and has been with the firm throughout his career, including serving as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee from 1983–2010 and as Chairman from 1997–2010. He focuses his practice on counseling national trade and professional associations and foundations in the fields of automotive parts, grain handling and export, higher education, credit counseling, and domestically produced athletic and waterproof plastic and rubber footwear. Recognized by Washingtonian magazine as one of the District’s top lawyers, he has been lead counsel in major regulatory matters and litigation throughout the country, as well as appellate challenges to federal agencies’ regulations.

The Justice Potter Stewart Award was established in 1997 by the CCE in honor and memory of Justice Potter Stewart, who served on the United States Supreme Court from 1958–1981.
