Trunk Quoted on Pharmacy Concerns Over Medicare’s New Drug Pricing System

STAT News

Life Sciences Industry Group Co-Leader Stephanie Trunk was quoted on Medicare’s updated drug price negotiation program under the Inflation Reduction Act being implemented in 2026.

Stephanie said that the law requires that drugmakers make negotiated prices available to pharmacies, though how the system will work is unclear.

Currently, pharmacies pay list prices, with insurers paying the difference between the list price and the negotiated lower prices in a process that can take up to two weeks.

Stephanie said that under the new system, pharmacies may have to wait an additional week to get reimbursed because a new third party will make up the difference.

Some pharmacies have indicated they may not stock drugs for which Medicare has negotiated a maximum fair price (MFP), which included insulin products, Eliquis, and other products commonly used by seniors.

“It’ll be interesting to watch for any fallout from the implementation of those MFPs,” Stephanie said.
