Joanna works with clients on a broad spectrum of international trade issues, including export compliance and enforcement actions, import compliance issues and trade remedy litigation. She regularly assists with export license applications, commodity classifications, sanctions screening, compliance program reviews, consent agreements, audits, subpoena responses, and voluntary disclosures to various government agencies, including the Directorate of Defense Trade Control (DDTC), the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
She leads and supports regulatory audits, compliance assessments, and internal reviews involving import, export, and sanctions programs. She assists clients with evaluating trade compliance risks, testing internal controls, enhancing policies and procedures, and responding to government inquiries and enforcement actions. She works closely with companies to strengthen compliance frameworks and improve audit readiness. She also leverages large and complex trade data sets—drawing on tools such as ACE, ITRAC, and AES—to support compliance reviews, investigations, and risk assessments. Her data-driven approach includes developing statistical sampling methodologies, conducting targeted analytics, and identifying compliance gaps to improve operational efficiency.
Joanna is a key member of the firm’s Tariff Task Force where she guides clients through the complexities of special US tariffs, including those imposed under Section 301, Section 232 (steel, aluminum, copper etc.), IEEPA, and reciprocal tariff authorities. She spearheads mitigation strategies, exclusion requests, and CAPE submissions that have resulted in millions of dollars in duty refunds.
She also covers a wide range of customs issues including valuation, classification, duty preference programs such as USMCA, reconciliation, duty drawback, protests, and voluntary disclosures to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Since February 2026, Joanna has been on secondment with a Fortune 500 company during a transitional period as Global Trade Compliance Manager, overseeing US customs and international trade compliance matters and coordinating with trade and compliance personnel across thirty operating companies.
Life Beyond the Law
When not working, Joanna enjoys baking, reading, and traveling internationally —having visited more than 40 countries and counting.
