Santos Quoted on Tariff Uncertainly for Fashion and Retail Businesses
Vogue Business
Customs & Import Compliance Practice Group Leader and Fashion & Retail Industry Co-Leader Angela Santas was quoted on the impact of chronic uncertainty regarding tariffs on the fashion and retail industries.
Angela said that the uncertainty retailers face is compounded by the informal nature of the announcements, noting that the tariff threat both emerged and was called up via social media.
“My first thought was, here we go again,” she said.
Angela added that the last year has demonstrated that President Trump’s Truth Social posts can either become actionable developments or just fade away. Regardless, any sort of speculative announcement can create real-life uncertainty for businesses that depend on predictable duty rates.
Angela said that tariff fatigue is real and can be dangerous. She said that ArentFox Schiff guides clients through contingency planning that doesn’t include overcorrection.
“We are also cautioning clients not to take immediate and irreversible action” noting that the tariff threats may not materialize, but contingency planning is important: “Just because they reached an agreement today doesn’t mean Trump wouldn’t impose tariffs later.”
