Mexico is an attractive trade destination because of trade policies and agreements, a global manufacturing base, and regimes like the maquiladora export promotion program. Still, USMCA has brought many challenges dealing with enhanced rules of origin, certification of origin, and compliance audits. We also discuss Chinese offshoring of finish manufacturing (“nearshoring” to the US), brought on during COVID, in industries such as automotive, domestic appliances, fiber optics, and electronics, and how Mexican businesses react to global sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
